NTBRC was funded through a $2.5 million federal grant under the Julia Gillard’s government, cementing the future of rowing in the South of Tasmania.
In 2014 this new facility replaced three run-down sheds built on gravel and suffering subsidence, now housing up to 200 rowing shells 12-20m long that belong to six rowing clubs, including Buckingham Rowing Club, Tasmania University Boat Club, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport, St Mary’s College & St Virgil’s College.
Gordan Stewart, Buckingham Rowing Club’s Captain in 2014, said the facility was an asset to the wider community and made rowing more accessible.
I think it’s going to do really good things for the whole community. Rowing is a fantastic sport for all ages and abilities. Rowers belong to a like-minded community that prizes camaraderie and team spirit
Gordan Stewart (2014 Bucks Club Captain)
The New Town Bay Rowing Centre opened in April 2014 and has since become a welcoming home base for rowers in Southern Tasmania, and a popular event space for the wider community.
